Dental Crowns - Whats The Process?
Easy 4 Step Process
Step 1 - Consultation and Examination
During your initial visit, your dentist examines your tooth to determine if a crown is necessary. X-rays may be taken to assess the extent of damage or decay.
Step 2 - Tooth Preparation
The tooth receiving the crown is prepared by removing a portion of its outer layer to create space for the crown. Impressions of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth are taken to create a custom-fitted crown.
Step 3 - Temporary Crown Placement (if necessary)
While your permanent crown is being fabricated in a dental laboratory (which usually takes a couple of weeks), a temporary crown may be placed to protect the prepared tooth. This temporary crown is typically made of acrylic and is not as durable as the final crown.
Step 4 - Final Crown Placement
Once the permanent crown is ready, you'll return to your dentist for its placement. Your dentist will ensure that the crown fits properly and matches your natural teeth in color and shape. Once approved, the crown is cemented or bonded onto the prepared tooth, completing the procedure. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to care for your new crown to ensure its longevity.
